The Via di Francesco gives you two options for walking from Assisi to Spello – either along the base of Monte Subasio or along its upper reaches. We feel the upper path is the choice, but more, we feel it’s the most scenic route on the entire Via di Francesco. Why? Because it checks all the boxes!
The stage that checks all the boxes, and the views are amazing
The stages starts in lovely Assisi, heading past San Gregorio and to the upper walls and Rocca Minore. From there it continues somewhat steeply to Eremo delle Carceri, one of Francis’s most beloved hideaways. It’s not that far uphill from here to the “bald” top of Monte Subasio, where the wild horses graze. The views are nothing short of stunning. Continue along the mountainside enjoying views, and then head downhill for a walk into beautiful Spello.
